Chilika

Chilika

Chilika is a shallow, brackish-water, lake nested in the heart of coastal Orissa. Chilika Lake which is the largest in the subcontinent is roughly pear shaped and varies in its extent in the dry and wet seasons between about 560 and 1100square kms and is about 32 km wide at its broadest.

Chilika lake is also the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl found anywhere on the Indian sub-continent. It is one of the hotspot of biodiversity in the country, and some rare, vulnerable and endangered species listed in the IUCN Red List of threatened Animals inhabit in the lagoon for atleast part of their life cycle. Chilika supports some of the largest congregation of migratory birds in the country, particularly during the winter. Flocks of migratory waterfowl arrive from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea, remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and South East Asia, Ladakh and the Himalayas, to feed and breed in Chilika’s fertile waters.
This vast and beautiful lagoon is known to change colors as the day progresses. A passing cloud or a bright sunny day enhances the beauty of this lagoon. Chilika is known for its rich flora and fauna. It supports an economy of its own. The local fishermen depend on it for their livelihood.
A number of islands are present in the lagoon with habitation and without the habitation, prominent among which are Krushnaprasad, Nalaban, Kalijai, Somolo, Rajhans, Honeymoon, Breakfast and Birds Island etc.

A Launch ride on this lagoon is the best way to explore it.

The pine grove that covers one-fourth of the island offers a shady recluse for al fresco picnics. The entire stretch of the beach is virtually deserted and a virtual paradise for collectors of shells and various colored pebbles that letter the shores.
