Brief History of Puri
Puri is one of the holy places described in the ancient Hindu scriptures. Set up probably in the post Kalinga war era, Puri was a knowledge centre by 7th century when “Adi Shankara” visited the place and set-up his own “Math” (Residential School) for vedic studies and hindu culture. Patronized by vedic scholars and powerful Kings of Orissa, Puri became the symbol of oriental philosophy and religion after construction of the temple of Lord Jagannath during late 11th century. Plundered by Muslim rulers (Nawabs) of Bengal several times, it became the centre of “Vaishnavite” cult after Sri Chaitanya made Puri his abode being rooted out of Nadiya (in Bangladesh now). Over the years Puri has been the symbol of the pride of Orissa’s culture, faith and belief centered around the presiding deity Lord Jagannath.
The topographical and locational strength of Puri covering sun, surf and sand supported by a green canopy of the hinter land have combined to create some of the most stunning destinations in the district and the visitor would do well to prepare himself for a vacation that will be a visual feast besides being highly educative and culturally pleasing. Puri is a land of temples, with a distinct religious architecture, superb monuments, inviting beaches, natural landscape set up on the canvas of centuries old values of Jagannath cult and belief.
Best of ancient and modern India, whose people share a strong sense of holiness, a sense of belonging with their beautiful land and their enduring links with the past, Puri offers tourists the rare opportunity of witnessing the colorful sunrise and sunset on the same beach with its golden sands. Temples and sanctuaries, golden beaches and glorious lakes that is visually fascinating, crafts that are colourful and vibrant and the numerous festivals makes Puri an interesting mosaic of the Indian civilization. |
