Brief History of Bhubaneswar
The name “BHUBANESWAR” is derived from one of the many names of Lord Shiva, the icon of destruction among the Hindu trinity. Bhubaneshwar, is the capital city of Orissa is the abode of the Lord and is famous for the 12th century Lingaraj temple. Being a centre of “Saivite” culture, the city is dotted with many heritage temples and is also called the “Temple City” of Orissa.
The city which has recorded history from 12th century was successor to the old capital Sisupalgarh of Kalinga kingdom, ruins of which is in close proximity. The historic Kalinga war fought by Ashoka on the banks of river Daya at Dhauligiri is on the periphery and has Ashoka’s edicts dating back to 3rd century BC.
Khandagiri and Udaygiri are the twin hills honey-combed with Jain caves at the city outskirts reveal the sculptural art of the 5th century BC and offer an interesting opportunity to study Jain history and philosophy. |
